Fans of Minecraft Legends are in for disappointment as Mojang announces the cessation of development for the action-adventure game, less than a year after its launch.

Unveiled at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcases in 2022, Minecraft Legends was officially released on April 18, 2023. Departing from the traditional Minecraft format, this spin-off introduced a real-time strategy (RTS) element, allowing players to command various mobs from the Minecraft universe. Despite its promising concept, the game fell short of expectations for many due to criticism of its lackluster AI and occasionally tedious gameplay.

The decision to end development was revealed through a January 10 blog post announcing the Lost Legends update. Mojang expressed its intention to “take a step back from development,” signaling the halt of any new content, including the Lost Legends and Marketplace DLC, for Minecraft Legends. However, players were offered one final piece of free content with the availability of the Bright-Eyed Hero skin in the Minecraft Legends Marketplace. Despite the cessation of development, Mojang did release Snow vs Snouts, a new Lost Legend, as part of the latest update. The game will continue to be playable with all functionality intact, allowing players to engage in PvP and co-op experiences.

Despite the initial surge of interest, with 3 million players exploring Minecraft Legends within the first weeks of its launch, the decision to end development is not entirely unexpected. While replicating the success of the original Minecraft was a formidable challenge, Minecraft Legends faced criticism and challenges post-launch, reflected in its mixed review average on Steam. Despite efforts to enhance the gameplay experience over the past nine months, these updates were insufficient to sustain active development beyond the game’s first anniversary.
