Super Smash Bros. 64 Mod Introduces Characters from N64 Cult Classics
The latest update to the Super Smash Bros. 64 mod, Smash Remix, brings characters from cult classic Nintendo 64 titles into the iconic fighting game. Among the new additions are Banjo and Kazooie from Rare’s titular franchise, Ebisumaru from Konami’s Goemon series, and Dragon King, a character from Masahiro Sakurai’s original scrapped fighting game that laid the foundation for Super Smash Bros. These characters have been eagerly welcomed by fans who closely follow this fan-made Super Smash Bros. project.
Smash Remix, a fan-created mod for the original Super Smash Bros. on Nintendo 64, aims to enhance the game with additional characters, stages, and features. While retaining the original 12 characters, the mod introduces new fighters to diversify the roster. Previous updates featured characters like Sonic the Hedgehog, Fire Emblem’s Marth, and Marina Liteyears from the N64 cult classic Mischief Makers. The latest version, 1.5.0, introduces three more characters.

Banjo and Kazooie make their entrance with a charming animation, featuring other members of Smash Remix’s roster playing in a band alongside Banjo.

The Dragon King, a boss variant based on Captain Falcon, is a surprising inclusion, originating from Masahiro Sakurai’s unreleased fighting game of the same name. This character faithfully retains its appearance based on early footage and screenshots shared by the Super Smash Bros. director in 2022. Choosing the Dragon King character even alters the game’s UI to match the prototype’s UI when all four players select it.
The video also highlights other additions, such as new stages inspired by Nintendo’s history, remixed single-player stages, a congratulations image gallery, customizable stage hazards, adjusted Pokémon appearance rates, and new items like the P-Wing from Super Mario Bros. 3.
