How can I check for an ectopic pregnancy?

Any pregnancy that develops outside of your uterus is called an ectopic pregnancy. When a fertilized egg implants in an area that cannot support its development, this happens. Most ectopic pregnancies occur in the fallopian tube. More infrequently, ectopic pregnancies can develop in your cervix, abdominal cavity, or ovary. Ectopic pregnancies cannot be maintained since only your uterus is designed to support pregnancy.

The majority of women are unaware that their pregnancy is ectopic until they contact their pregnancy care provider for a prenatal appointment, bloodwork, or ultrasound. Based on what happens at this appointment, your clinician may suspect an ectopic pregnancy.

Unfortunately, an ectopic pregnancy results in the death of the fetus, ending your pregnancy. You cannot transfer an egg to your uterus once it has implanted outside of it. It’s crucial to treat ectopic pregnancies right away. There may be significant internal bleeding if the fallopian tube where the egg was inserted ruptures.
